Counselling and Spiritual Accompaniment
Alongside you on the journey
Alongside you on the journey
Present Reality Counselling and Accompaniment. Walking with you on your journey towards wholeness.
The common theme in spiritual accompaniment and therapeutic counselling is that we are working together in the reality of life here and now - the present reality
My name is David Tanner and I have been a qualified counsellor and supervisor for a number of years.
I have more recently completed a course in Spiritual Direction (I prefer the term Accompaniment).
My interest is in accompanying people on their journeys towards wholeness - mental, emotional and spiritual wholeness
I offer both therapeutic counselling and spiritual accompaniment as two distinct means of help and support.
In my counselling practice, I offer sessions using Zoom
For Spiritual Accompaniment I can offer face to face sessions and also outdoor accompaniment (usually short walks)
This approach to counselling focuses on helping you to understand yourself and how you 'tick'.
Person-centred therapy is based on belief that each person has the potential for growth and change. Inside each person is the ability to move towards reaching your full potential.
Importantly, person-centred theory challenges the idea that the therapist should be the ‘expert.’ Person-centred counsellors believe that you know your experience best. As the counsellor I would be non-directive and the session would be led by you as the client. One aim of person-centred counselling is to help you to feel empowered, valued, worthy and able to make the changes that you wish to. As a client you would be valued, trusted and not judged.
I offer a free 30 minute session to see if you feel that we would work well together.
This would then be followed by a number of sessions of up to one hour, usually weekly. The number of sessions is open ended, however we will review the situation regularly to ensure that you are still receiving benefit from our work together
I first started to offer on-line therapy during the COVID lockdowns and quickly found that this was popular with clients and was just as effective. I have continued to work in this way as it allows me to be more flexible with my availability for clients.
I have found Zoom to be a reliable and secure platform for online counselling which helps to maintain privacy and confidentiality.
To ensure that I work to the highest professional and ethical standards I am a member of the ACC - Association for Christians in Counselling and Linked Professions. You can find out more about them and the ethical standards at www.acc-uk.org
I hold professional liability insurance and am registered with the information commissioner.

Sometimes also called Spiritual Direction, Spiritual Accompaniment provides an opportunity to explore your journey and experience of faith with someone who walks alongside you on that journey. For many people who want to become more intentional with their faith and spiritual growth, this can be really helpful.
I have been on my own faith journey for around 50 years now and have quite a variety of life experiences along the way. After leaving full time employment in 2012, I trained as a therapeutic counsellor and have practised counselling since then. More recently I have completed a course in Spiritual Direction at Sarum College.
My training was not in one specific approach to Spiritual Accompaniment so I am able to work flexibly in a way that fits with your needs.
I can offer sessions face to face or online (using Zoom) I also offer 'walking' accompaniment. This approach provides the opportunity to talk whilst being out in the natural world. If this would interest you please get in touch to discuss this further.
If you feel that Spiritual Accompaniment may be something that would be a benefit to you please get in touch and we can arrange to have a conversation about how this could work for you.
My membership of the Association of Christians in Counselling and Linked Professions (ACC) covers my Spiritual Accompaniment as well as my counselling work. I carry professional insurance for this work.
Counselling and Spiritual Accompaniment both rely on the principles of privacy and confidentiality. This enables us to work in an atmosphere where there is freedom to talk about anything without fear of being overheard or that what has been said will go beyond the boundaries of the relationship. This would be discussed on more detail at the initial meeting .
The standards of privacy and confidentiality that I work to are defined in the code of ethics of the ACC, and are compliant with relevant data protection legislation and General Data Protection Regulations.
Send me a message or ask me a question using this form. I will do my best to get back to you soon!
